What Will You Do Differently in 2013?

Each year, we make a plan for the upcoming year. Maybe it’s in writing, maybe it’s derived one morning in the shower. But we all do it. Here we are, in the middle of December. Take a moment to look back and ask yourself “What didn’t I achieve that I really thought I was going to this year?” Now ask yourself why you didn’t achieve that goal, or those goals.

Here’s the hard part: Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Instead, look ahead and make a plan for 2013. What is the biggest addition/subtraction/change you want to make to your 2013 marketing plan that will help propel your company into further success?

My grandfather always likes to say “All businesses are different… and they’re all the same.” Basically, businesses all operate the same way, and only the end product (or service) changes. He’s not far off. And with that in mind, here are a few ideas for your 2013 marketing goals.

– Go mobile! There’s enough proof out there that you’re using your smartphone or tablet more than ever, your kids are, your friends are, your co-workers are… so why aren’t you embracing that for your own company? Mobile applications aren’t for everyone, but mobile websites are. (Shameless plug: we just built a Mobile Website module to our content management system that allows the web manager to control content on the website, mobile site, or both).

– Sell yourself: Let’s not get carried away; I’m not suggesting what you think I am. Work on presenting yourself as an industry leader, whether you’re marketing a business or selling a refrigerator. In addition to promoting your business, make your potential audience want to work with you specifically. Go to networking events, give presentations, start a blog – make yourself look good!

– Printed Materials: Yes, this is still important! Sure, some people don’t like the paper stuff, but many people still prefer to have something tangible. It also lasts longer, and with other companies producing less printed materials than before, it helps yours stand out that much more. So keep on printing, and don’t forget to reevaluate their design to ensure it’s fresh and modern and the content is all relevant.

– Online Reputation Management: Do you have client reviews on your website, on your Google page, or in industry-relevant directories? These are very important in the search engine algorithm, and make you look good! Build up your “references” to get the good word out there that everyone should do business with YOU!

So what is your #1 goal for next year? These are just four ideas. Comment with what you’re going to do for your company! And then tell someone else – it makes you more accountable and more likely that you’ll accomplish it.
